I was very interested in learning Englishwhen I was still in my childhood.
It caused me to try to enter a secondaryschool in which I could learn English.
But my dream was crushed because of myfather's political problem. I entered
Huangpu Middle Schoolat last, where I could only learn Russian.
I was so taken with English that my fathertaught me the English alphabet
and phonetic symbols. From then on, I started tolearn English by myself.
The unexpected always seems to happen. Whenthe Cultural Revolution began,
I became a child of what in those days were theso-called “black seven”. Every
day the coming political movement frightened me.How could I go on learning
English?
It seemed at times that fortune wastaunting me. In answer to the call,“The
educated youth must get re-educatedfrom the poor and lower middle peasants”,
I had to go to the countryside. I wasnot willing to do so at first because of
my eagerness to study.
I went to a farm that is located in the Zhanjiang area, while mymother was
being confined. As we worked and lived there as peasants, I changedinto a weak
girl. Life was hard, but I still maintained my interests inEnglish. I couldn’t
find an English textbook there, let alone any Englishmaterials. But I always
thought,“Where there is a will, there is a way.”Finally, I borrowed an old
textbook from one of my friends and startedto learn from the beginning. I
recited new words and learned some simplegrammar. Studying brought new life
into my soul.
This feeling didn't last long however sinceI had been given a warning by
the head of the production team. Once he said ata team meeting,“There
issomeone who is learning English. What a serious problem and what a
terribleidea!” Meanwhile, another head of the team asked me if I wanted to
escape overseas. I could onlylearn English in bed with a small, dim lamp from
that day.
A long eight years passed. I finally had achance to return to the side of
my parents. It was a great turning of myfortune. In order to make progress, I
learned English lessons on the radio.
Then I was fortunate to enter a TVUniversity, where my English improved
extensively. I spent all my leisure timememorizing words, reciting tests, and
delving into the difficult grammar rules.
I valued my time at TV University. So Idevoted my heart and mind to study.
I gave birth to my daughter during thosevery busy days while I was preparing
for the graduation examination.
I am so fond of English that I have notgiven it up through all these years
of adversity. As the saying goes, “One isnever too old to learn.” I hope that
I can continue learning English for therest of my life.
