Review of Pride and Prejudice

When I read the first sentence --“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”, I was absorbed in meditation. What kind of marriages they pursuit at that time? In order to find the answer, I read the whole novel. The novel, Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen mainly talks about four marriages and destinies -- Elizabeth and Darcy, Charlotte and Collins, Jane and Bingley, Lydia and Wickham. 

Marriage based on money is common at that time. Above all, women have no job and no money in the aspect of economy. Women long to marry someone who has much money and high position. Only in this way, can they lead a comfortable life. Moreover, inequalities between women and men make women be inferior to men on social status. women didn’t have right at all. For example, property can be only inherited by men. Besides, the environment leads to the marriage. Jane Austen was born in Regency Period when Middle class gained social status. If women want to go out and make their livings by themselves, they will be condemned on all hands. Under this pressure, women have to seek the marriage which is well matched in social and economic status, to let them or their family get rid of poor. For instance, the marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is based on monetary interest, rather than love. Therefore, women can only live and depend on their husband after marriage because of inequalities on economy and position. 

As far as I am concerned, marriage must be based on love. First of all, love is the foundation of marriage. If a couple argues with each other, love will disarm contradiction between couple. As long as love is in their lives, they will have a peaceful and lasting marriage. This relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy brings to light the significance of love in marriage. When they knew each other in the ascendant, all pride and prejudice were melting and they fell in love each other. So, I believe love can be exist in marriage from beginning to end.

At present, some views of marriages are the same as those which are in Pride and Prejudice. Today, the role of women undergoes significant change. First, Women have right to be educated, to work and to pursuit true love. What’s more, women can do what they like, can go where they like, can get rid of the control of men, can be more independent than men, can be more intelligent than men. Although women and men are equal, women also hold the idea that men is family's economic mainstay so that they would rather marry someone who has money, house, and car instead of a poor man. A word has become hot recently on the internet -- “Prefer to sit in the BMW cars crying, but refuse to sit at the back of bicycle laughing.” This word revels some women also want to marry a husband to save themselves from spinsterhood or to gain financial security.

In my opinion, women should be independent and enterprising. Firstly, women should study hard to improve themselves and broaden one's horizon. Secondly, women are able to own a successful career so that women can not only ensure supply but also can choose men they really love without considering money and position. Besides, they ought to seek the marriage based on love and understanding. As new Marriage Law was promulgated, an increasing number of women are aware that marriage cannot be based on monetary interest. Last but not least, when women deal with something, they should listen to reason and avoid pride and prejudice.
